This is a beautiful meditation to help cultivate a deep awareness of your own body and your own inner guidance system. It opens up possibility for deep love and trust of yourself.

Being a health nut, I had dabbled in meditation here and there, but never really connected with it. I was a new mom experiencing anxiety, depression, and huge identity loss…and then I became a mom of two and that magnified. I needed a healthy outlet and to quiet my mind because I was thinking myself into more chaos and worsening my symptoms.

I remember being 3 weeks postpartum specifically. I was sitting in my cute, grey glider chair with my 3-week-old in my arms… on my third hour of crying some intense baby blue tears.

I was angry that I couldn’t stop.
I felt alone.
I felt invisible.
I felt hopeless and most of all...


so disconnected from the POWER + CONFIDENCE I once had.

My mom showed up, she is intuitive like that. She had me do this kundalini mantra meditation to help with depression and cognitive processing. Which pissed me off even more.

I didn’t want to sing. I didn’t want to be told what to do. I wasn’t in the mood for any Zen nonsense...I mean couldn’t she tell in how bad of a mood I was in?

I did it. I dropped my ego and I said FINE. Even though I only whispered that mantra and gave it half of my proper attention…I felt a shift. A HUGE BREATHE OF FRESH AIR. So much gratitude in that moment. I felt a moment of clarity that I was going to make it.

Postpartum depression was not going to own me and I COULD step back into my power at any moment...JUST LIKE THIS ONE.

I share this with you because no matter how seasoned we are in meditation, spirituality, or even our career we still must show up and put forth INTENTION + ACTION to remain connected and to get results.

How to Do So Hum

  1. Choose a quiet space where you will not be disturbed. Create “your” meditation space. A sacred space that is full of love and reverence that you come back to as often as possible to meditate. You can place things that remind you of beauty, life, and connection here.
     

  2. Set your timer (Don’t press start quite yet). Choose anywhere from 3 to 30 minutes. *The Insight Timer App is a great mediation tool. 
     

  3. Sit in a comfortable, seated position. Preferably easy pose. Keep spine elongated and seek to reach the crown of your head to the sky.
     

  4. Place your hands in guyan mudra. Thumb and first finger touching. Face palms to the sky. Rest your hands gently over your knees.
     

  5. Begin your ujjayi breath (audible, ocean-like breath) Take three breaths or breathe like this for up to one minute.
     

  6. Start your timer and begin silently chanting the mantra SO HUM. Imagine a projector screen shooting out from your third eye center and see the word SO on the inhale and HUM on the exhale.
     

  7. If your mind wanders bring your awareness back to your mantra and reconnect.
     

  8. To end bring your hands to prayer pose, thumb to your sternum and share gratitude for the practice. I like to say Namaste.
     

  9. I like to take a moment or an extra couple of minutes here to really be in the energy of the meditation and observe how I am feeling. Wonderful time to journal and reflect!
